The Importance Of Healthy Eyes
Many people make an appointment with their eye doctor only when vision becomes blurry or after experiencing symptoms of eyestrain. But did you know that the vision evaluation is only part of the reason you should see your eye doctor regularly. The other equally important component to a thorough eye exam is the eye health evaluation. There are many disorders of the eye which can develop "silently" or with no effect on vision in the early stages. Examples include glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and hypertensive retinopathy to name only a few. If left untreated these disorders can develop into serious sight threatening conditions which can result in permanent vision loss or blindness. So even if your vision is clear it is important to see your eye doctor regularly. A thorough eye health evaluation should include dilation of the eyes. This means that eye drops are used during the exam in order to enlarge the pupil, or central opening, of the eye. This allows the doctor to look into the eyes with the use of a microscope, and evaluate the appearance of the internal structures. In addition to finding eye disease, dilation also allows the doctor to view the blood vessels, which can indicate the presence of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other whole-body related illnesses.

The American Optometric Association recommends the comprehensive eye health evaluation at the following ages: 6 months of age, 3 years, before entering school, every 1-2 years thereafter for healthy eyes throughout adulthood, and more frequently if any eye health disorders are discovered.
